The Jurassic Coast Tour
This tour takes us on a journey back through various geological time zones, as we explore the UNESCO World Heritage site that is the Jurassic Coast.
This 95 mile stretch of coastline is hugely important in that within the sedimentary rock that’s exposed in the cliffs, the history of Earth is revealed across 185 million years, forming a near complete record of the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. It is so important that it became England’s first natural World Heritage site back in 2001, and when you visit it, you will start to understand just why it is so iconic, and what it is that attracts so much interest, since it is a truly beautiful coastline to explore.
On this day, we drive along much of this incredible coastline, visiting coves, beaches, villages and towns along the way, all of them with their own stories to tell. We stop briefly at the town of Exmouth, the starting point of the Jurassic Coast. Then we head along to the charming old seaside town of Budleigh Salterton. We then head inland to East Budleigh to see where Sir Walter Raleigh was brought up, before moving along to Sidmouth, Branscombe and Beer. Our final stop of the day will be over the border into Dorset to visit Charmouth, where we will have the opportunity to do some fossil hunting*, and perhaps take back a handful of the wonderful ancient artefacts that we find on the beach.
